Sullivan WI Family Photography With a Personal Touch
Family photos do not always need to happen at a traditional photography location.
Sometimes, the best setting is somewhere your family already loves.
That was exactly the idea behind this Sullivan, Wisconsin family photography session. Instead of meeting at a typical park, we started at a local creek that this family visits often. Then, we headed back to their farmhouse for backyard lifestyle photos.
The result was a family session that felt personal, relaxed, and completely fitting for their three boys.
Family Photos at a Sullivan WI Creek
It was about 90 degrees and incredibly humid on the evening of this session. However, we leaned into it instead of fighting it.
These three boys are total country boys. They love exploring, being outside, and getting a little messy. So we decided to make the heat part of the adventure.
We started in the shallow creek, where the boys searched for rocks and had fun throwing them into the water.
Those simple moments gave us plenty of opportunities for genuine smiles and interaction. The boys were not simply standing still and smiling at a camera. They were exploring a place they already knew and loved.
That made the photographs feel much more like them.
What to Wear for Creek Family Photos
For the creek portion of the session, the family chose a simple color palette.
The boys wore white tees with blue jeans, while mom wore a blue dress.
The colors looked beautiful against the green trees, water, and natural surroundings. The outfits also felt appropriate for an evening spent playing outside.
When choosing outfits for outdoor family photos, I love seeing families coordinate with the environment without blending completely into it. These outfits did exactly that.
Backyard Family Photography in Sullivan WI
After we finished at the creek, we headed back to the family's farmhouse.
This is another reason I love photographing families in locations that actually mean something to them.
The boys showed me their favorite backyard activities, including their trampoline and swings. Instead of trying to manufacture moments, we simply documented what they already loved doing.
That approach works especially well with young kids. Familiar surroundings can help children relax because they already know the space.
Plus, years from now, those photographs will show more than what everyone looked like. They will remind the family of the backyard where the boys played together.
Why Personal Locations Make Great Family Photos
A park can be beautiful. However, your favorite creek, backyard, farm, or neighborhood can tell a much more personal story.
Your family does not need to sit perfectly still for every photo. In fact, some of my favorite images happen while kids are exploring, playing, laughing, or interacting with their parents.
That is why I love creating a mix of lightly posed portraits and natural lifestyle photographs.
