A First Birthday Photography Session at Mullens Ice Creamery
Sometimes the best photography ideas are the ones that feel a little unexpected.
For this Watertown, Wisconsin first birthday session, we skipped the traditional cake smash setup and headed to a local favorite instead: Mullens Ice Creamery.
Ice cream makes the perfect summer birthday treat, so it felt like a fun and personal way to celebrate baby girl's first birthday.
And she absolutely loved it.
First Birthday Photos at Mullens Ice Creamery in Watertown
We started inside Mullens Ice Creamery, where the staff was incredibly kind and let us take over a corner booth for a few minutes.
Baby girl got her very own special dish of ice cream.
Then, she dove right in.
Watching a one-year-old discover ice cream for the first time is pretty adorable. She explored her birthday treat while we captured all of those curious expressions, smiles, and messy little moments.
The ice cream also gave us a fun alternative to a traditional cake smash.
If your baby loves a certain food, family activity, or local spot, we can build the session around that instead.
Watertown Family Photos by the River
We were not finished yet!
After photographing outside the ice cream shop, we crossed the street and headed toward the river for another set of family photos.
Suddenly, one little first birthday session gave us several completely different looks.
We had the cozy ice cream shop. The textured brick building. Flowers that we saw near the splash pad. Then, the natural setting near the river.
Baby girl looked adorable in every setting.
Why Think Outside the Box for Family Photography?
Your family photography session does not have to happen in a studio or traditional park.
If your family has a favorite ice cream shop, coffee shop, farm, bookstore, neighborhood, or other meaningful location, we can talk about turning that idea into a photography session.
These personal locations can tell a much bigger story.
Years from now, the photographs will not just show what your baby looked like at one year old. They will remind you of the places you loved visiting together during that season of life.
That is exactly what I want family photography to do.
